Operating within Craig & Gail's Café, Kua Mākona i Whakamaru is our crisis recovery café.
A safe, supportive space for anyone experiencing a crisis, emotional distress or thoughts of suicide.
Open 24 hours a day, Thursday to Monday, it provides an alternative that compliments traditional mental health services, easing pressure on clinical emergency care.
Our trained kaitiaki and peer-support workers – many with lived experience of mental health recovery – offer empathy, understanding, and a sense of community in a non-clinical environment.
Here, people can find calm, connection, and practical help, including food, drinks, and guidance toward other community resources.

The café supports individuals who
- Are experiencing emotional distress, including thoughts of suicide, but are not at imminent risk of taking their own life.
- Are going through a mental health crisis, including distress triggered by life events, trauma, or anxiety, but who do not require immediate medical intervention.
- May be struggling with feelings of hopelessness or isolation and would benefit from peer support to process their emotions in a safe, non-judgmental environment.
